International Women 's Day! News and Bits

Happy International Women’s Day! A bit of a short one today. I was recently approached by Llantarnam Grange to put together a guest post for their blog and I decided that it would best to, rather than repeat myself over here, point you in the direction of some other blogs and sites which were interesting to me, so might be to you too!

News - Llantarnam Grange Guest Blog Post

Like I mentioned above, I was approached by Llantarnam Grange to write a guest blog post for International Women’s Day and at first, I had no idea what to write about, or more specifically, what angle to take. After searching my brain for something appropriate, I decided to focus on the women and artworks that have impacted me the most throughout my life as an artist, historian and creative. Luckily I was constrained by a word limit, otherwise I would have waffled on for god knows how long.

Auction of ‘I sommervarmen at Bruun Rasmussen

(c) Gerda Wegener, I sommervarmen (In the Heat of Summer), 1924

Today the painting “I sommervarmen” (In the Heat of Summer), 1924, a portrait of Lili Elbe by Gerda Wegener, goes on auction almost 100 years after Lili Elbe underwent one of the world’s first gender affirmation surgeries. This auction is not only a celebration of women painters in Danish history, but the depiction of trans women and their histories.

If you would like to keep an eye on how the painting does/did, check out the auction house website here.

Four Ukrainian Women Photographers

If you subscribe to my newsletter, you will already know about this article, however I thought I would also share it here for others to see! As some of you know I co wrote an entry for the publication “Une Histoire Mondiale Des Femmes Photographes” and whilst doing some research the other day, I came across a website that had listed the Ukrainian entries from the book. I was going to write a blog post highlighting some Ukrainian photographers however this is a really great summary and is definitely worth a read!

I wanted to finish this blog post by providing a couple of links to information and resources with how to support the people of Ukraine. Social Media has been incredibly overwhelming with information and resources, that I found it very hard to process and figure out where to begin especially as so many links were UK based. I always encourage people to research locally at what your own country, government and peers can do, so that’s what I am doing.

For Brits living in Sweden, one of the go to News resources is thelocal, usually subscription based access. However they have provided an all access article with links to national and international organisations you can support.

The RFSL, the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex rights, who have previously worked with Ukrainian LGBTQI organizations, are currently raising funds to give directly to these organisations and to the evacuation of LGBTQI individuals.

TGEU or Transgender Eroupe have an ongoing/continually updated resources list to support LGBTQIA people.
